Remember the Deeds of the LORD

“I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds. Your ways, O God, are holy. What god is as great as our God?” – Psalm 77:11-13

As life remains busy (and seemingly only gets busier) it is difficult to carve out time to consider who our God is and what He has done for us. Between marriage, work, raising children, friends, television, movies, sporting events and countless other “priorities” that we fill our schedules with, it turns out that spending ‘quiet time’ meditating on the Lord and remembering His deeds and His miracles falls somewhere close to last on most of our lists. Yes, it is difficult to find the time; but it should be a priority of ours none the less – our top priority!

“Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced.” – 1 Chronicles 16:11-13

Did you know that in the Bible we are called to remember what God has done for us (in some way or another) over 233 times! There are 66 books in the Bible, so on average we are called to remember God 3.5 times per book. So, it would appear that God wants us to remember Him and focus on Him (rather than on ourselves) and yet we do the opposite – consistently placing our own needs and priorities above Him.

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:1-2

Romans 12:1-2 is one of my favorite passages in all of the Scriptures – it is a call to us from God to “be transformed by the renewing of [our] mind” and to leave our old patterns of behavior behind us. The equation, when you think about it is very simple:

Reading/Studying/Meditating/Applying the Scriptures = Transformed mind

Some of you will say, “Oh that is a simpleton answer.” Yes, it is. But think about it, doing what God asks of us is only difficult because we make it that way. We allow things in our lives to become a higher priority than God – then we can’t understand why we feel disconnected from God in our spiritual lives.
So understand the simplicity of what God is asking of us – He is asking us to ‘change’ or be ‘transformed’ from our old patterns of behavior (selfishness) by submitting to His authority and His truth found in the Scriptures. As we do this, and I have seen it time and time again prove itself, we will become people who
remember the deeds of the LORD…remember [His] miracles of long ago… meditate on all [His] works and consider all [His] mighty deeds. Because as the Psalmist said:

“Your ways, O God, are holy. What god is as great as our God?” – Psalm 77:13
